Os Galaktlan chegam-nos da Estónia, através do selo da Kohvi, uma espécie de “versao leste” da Warp, menos voltada para a musica concreta e mais para sons ambient. Os Galaktlan surgem como projecto paralelo de Taavi Laatsit aos Uni (onde forma parelha com Hendrik Luuk), para levar a cabo uma performance numa festa underground - “Night Alert”, no hangar de uma base militar abandonada. A continuidade dos Galaktlan teve directamente a ver com a correspond?ncia entre a atmosfera densa e mistica do evento e a sua musica.
Editado em vinyl e CD (inclui 4 faixas bonus – “foll”, “mina kaheks”, “videotone” e “40000 lampi” – expandindo um pouco mais a visao “sonhante” de Taavi Laatsit), Sinine Platoo é uma seleccao de temas multi-estruturais, numa teia digital de loops barrocos que se repetem minimalmente até ao infinito. Esta musica nao oferece respostas, antes sugere sentimentos, temperamentos e paradoxos, a partir de sons sintéticos, delicados, sem ruidos desnecessarios, que se sobrepõem a um pulsar ritmico omnipresente e linhas de baixo subterraneas.

Hailing from Estonia, Taavi Laatsit presents his first album as Galaktlan. Sinine Platoo is a brilliant collection of hypnotic grooves, atmospheric structures and warm melodies typical of the Nordic electronic scene.
“To get a deeper understanding of Galaktlan's music, one has to know what the winter is like in Nordic countries” claims the press release. Sinine Platoo, which translates as Blue Plateau, surely is a typical piece of sub-arctic electronica, sometimes reminiscent of early Biosphere. Ambient cool waves, arid beat patterns, floating melodies and found sounds are all characteristics of the ever growing Nordic electronic scene, and this album is no exception.
Galaktlan is the project of Estonian musician Taavi Laatsit. Currently based in Tallinn, Laatsit originally comes from the university town of Tartu, situated in the South East of this small former Soviet republic, stuck between Latvia in the South, Russia in the East and the Gulf of Finland in the North. Laatsit studied French horn before switching to electronic music in the early nineties, finally releasing his first full length as Uni, a collaboration with label mate Hendrik Luuk, as well as a compilation of EPs recorded under his Vonsouck incarnation, in 1999. After moving to the Estonian capital, he started work on his latest project, Galaktlan. Recorded at Dubplates studio, where the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction sound originated, Sinine Platoo is an intriguing collection of warm analogue electronic music. Entirely instrumental, the ten tracks gathered here emphasise on pure melodic lines and beautiful calm atmosphere, all developing from a common sonic ground. Seeking inspiration in Soviet sci-fi movies, Laatsit organises his compositions to reflect his environment, by applying soothing pressures of warmth in otherwise dry landscapes. Sometimes seeking refuge in the effervescent electronic movement of the early nineties, Sinine Platoo presents a fine actualisation of the hypnotic grooves and aquatic ambiences pioneered by the likes of Black Dog and B12. The clever assemblage of delicate organic structures ranges from the dark beats and monomorphic drones of the title track and the twitchy electro of Mina Kaheks to the peaceful Klavestra and Tekitaja or the xhilarating 40,000 Lampi, highlighting Laatsit’s great versatility as a musician, while remaining extremely constant all the way through.
Estonia is emerging as one of the most interesting new grounds for electronic musicians, with Kohvirecords leading the way. With this first Galaktlan album, Taavi Laatsit seems determined to make a lasting impression, challenging the more established artists on their own ground.

Taavi Laatsit, desde Estonia propone una electrónica fría y melódica
Taavi Laatsit se esconde detrás de Galaktlan, un proyecto musical que nos llega desde Estonia. Un disco emotivo en el que este artista nos invita a conocer ese clima gélido en el que habita. Electrónica fría y melódica que describe sensaciones y formas de vida. A 20 grados bajo cero la comunicación entre personas se limita a menudo a simples pensamientos en lugar de palabras. Galaktlan lo hace con sónidos. No es un disco que abuse de ruidos innecesarios sino que más bien se mantiene en el nivel adecuado para que fluyan los estados de animo y podamos adentrarnos en esas estepas rodeadas de mar por ambos lados, en ese largo invierno que influencia el trabajo de este músico. A principios de los noventa comenzó a experimentar en la creación de sonidos con computadora. Todavía lentos y con softwares muy primitivos los resultados eran siempre tentadores. En 1999, con su alias de Vonsuck sampleaba sonidos de la naturaleza de los vinilos del sello soviético Melodia. Entre sus influencias las películas de Ciencia-Ficción Soviéticas y las obras del compositor Sven Grünberg. En definitiva después de estos breves detallles biográficos y algunas impresiones del disco queda decir que vale la pena hacerse con uno para conocer y disfrutar de la sensibilidad con la que trabaja este músico y la capacidad de ensueño que es capaz de transmitirnos con la colaboración de su frío clima.

Weite schneebedeckte Flächen. Kondenswölkchen beim Ausatmen. Klirrende Kälte bei Sonnenschein. Wie ein klangmalerisches Landschaftsportrait des Heimatlandes Estland. Unglaublich voluminös dehnen sich die Stücke aus und liefern bis in entfernte Geräuschbereiche filigran erhörbare Flocken. Sanft auf dem Trommelfell landend und weich zerfließend. Fast wie ein Blick durch eine gefrorene Scheibe auf eine gemächlich vorbeigleitende Unschärfe mit im Eis gespiegelten, bizarren Formen. Aber gleichzeitig verkörpern alle Tracks auch eine gewisse Wärme, die wie ein dickes Fell zwar den Frost spüren läßt, ihn dennoch aber auf Distanz hält. Würde man einen Film aus Stanislav Lems Buch "Robotermärchen" machen, hätte man bereits den passenden Soundtrack.

Unsere Freunde aus Estland kehren zurück auf den Plattenteller. Galaktlan, das gleich mal vorweg, auch wenn es ja anders extrem schwer vorstellbar gewesen wäre, macht hier alles richtig auf diesen sechs wunderbaren Tracks, die allesamt samtig weich und in tiefes Dunkelblau gekleidet die deepen Spielereien der in sich völlig verzwirbelten und rauschenden Elektronika auf das Siegertreppchen hebt. Wunderbar luftig und vorsichtig schiebt Galaktlan einen behutsamen Sound nach dem nächsten in den Kreisel, knipst das Licht im gerade fertig gewordenen Tunnel nach Detroit an, schnallt sich seinen Rucksack um und macht sich auf den Weg, das Kopfkissen am Ohr, den Keks in der Hand. Fast schon therapeutisch, diese Genialität.

Our friends from Estonia are coming back again onto the turntable. Galaktlan, at the outset, makes everything all right on these six beautiful tracks - hard to imagine the other way round. All of them are velvety soft and dressed in a deep dark blue and lift the profound playing with their complete twirled and rushed electronica on to the victory column. Galaktlan moves wonderful breezy and carefully one cautious sound after another into the spinning top, clicks the light in the only just finished tunnel to Detroit, buckles on his backpack and goes his way - the pillow at his ear - the biscuit in his hand. Close to therapeutical, this ingenuity.

The thing I love most of working at the Chain D.L.K. project is that I've got the opportunity of discover new interesting acts which it couldn't be possible to listen in other ways. From far Estonia comes this label called Kohvi, a sort of eastern version of Warp but more focused on ambient sounds. Galaktlan project was created as a Taavi Laatsit's side project to Uni. Galaktlan was formed to perform on a very special underground party called "Night Alert", which took place in an abandoned military rocketbase hangar.
The mystical and deep atmosphere of this event was the reason why Taavi wanted to continue the Galaktlan project.SININE PLATOO as stated into the label's website comes from Galaktlan's dream where he saw a plateau hanging in the void. Its affective quality can be paralleled with the one of "Solaris" by Andrei Tarkovski where intelligent plasma, capable of influencing people's thoughts, hovers above the planet's surface. The album has been released on 12" vinyl and on a CDr but this last one has got four bonus tracks "Foll", "Mina Kaheks", "Videoton" and "40000 Lampi" which expand a little more the dreamy vision that Galaktlan music is capable to create. Musically the tracks are multi structured where all the parts (which are mainly synthetic sounds with solid treated digital drum machine patterns) evolve creating a complex structure like if it's a web made of sounds. Emotionally the ten tracks are delicate and melancholic but without being sad. It could be the effect of living near a sea of ice... Taste it at the label's website where you can find the real audio files of all the tracks.

Wenn man dieses Album hört, bekommt man, glaube ich, eine gute Vorstellung davon, wie es sein muß, auf dem Dach eines riesigen Gebirges zu stehen, eingehüllt von nichts als kalter,klarer Luft, dem endlosen Horizont und dem Gefühl der Welt entrückt worden zu sein. Alles Konkrete verschwindet unter den Wolken zu deinen Füßen, und nur die Sonne küßt mit milchigem Glanz deine Stirn, läßt dich das Wesentliche sehen. Mann, was für ein Film diese Platte in einem auslösen kann, unglaublich! Zum Teil liegt das sicher auch an der Herkunft von "Galaktlan", alias "Uni", aka "Kulgurid", mit Pseudonym "Kismabande". Der äußerst aktive Musiker stammt nämlich aus dem dünn besiedelten und im Winter extrem kalten Estland, weshalb seine Musik aber keinesfalls karg oder gar frostig klingt. Seine untrashigen Beats sind bescheiden verfrickelt und obwohl sie sehr präsent sind, treten sie hinter den dezent abgemischten und sehnsüchtigen Melodien und Klängen immer weiter zurück, je mehr diese auf dich einwirken und sich über die Grenzen deines Zimmers, deiner Stadt und deines Lebens ausbreiten. Elektronika für Kurzzeit-Aussteiger, die mal eine andere Perspektive und etwas Abstand zu den Problemen dieser Welt gewinnen wollen, ohne gleich Meere zu überqueren, in Höhlen abzutauchen oder eben Gipfel zu erstürmen. Das nenn ich mal musikalische Grenzerfahrung!

Kohvi uit Estland blijft ons verbazen, na de twee label samplers die ons bereikten, nu deze CD van Galaktlan. Het gaat om het alter ego van Taavi Laatsit die in 1999 al een plaat uitbracht onder het synoniem Vonsuck en samen met Hendrik Luuk Uni vormt.
Taavi schept met zijn project Galaktlan een warme organisch sfeer die toch niet altijd behagelijk is, soms ongrijpbaar, onaards overkomt. Niet verwonderlijk als je weet dat één van zijn inspiratie bronnen oude Russische science fiction films is. De nummers hebben naast de zweverige organisch muziek ook een ritmisch aspect. De ritmisch zijn in het totaal geluid verweven, en bestaan dikwijls uit minimaal pulserende elektronica met herkenbare rudimentaire melodietjes, alla kraftwerk ("Videoton").
Een plaat die opvalt in de huidige elektronica scène door het warme geluid, het wordt des te spannender daar het toch dikwijls is opgebouwd uit minimale stukjes… Aanrader.
Kohvi from Estonia keeps us surprising, after two label sampler which reach us, now this CD from Galaktlan. Which is the alter ego from Taavi Laatsit who in 1999 released an album under the synonym Vonsuck and forms Uni together with Hendrik Luuk.
Taavi create with his project Galaktlan a warm organic mood which is not always pleasing, sometimes not cacheable, not-earth. Not surprising if you now that one of his influences are Old Russian science fiction movies. The songs have besides the warm organic music also a rhythmic aspect. The rhythms are weave in the total sound, and are mostly build up around minimal pulsing electronic with recognisable rudimentary melodies, like Kraftwerk ("Videoton"). A record that strike in the nowadays electronic scene with his warm sound, it is even more interesting that it is build with minimal pieces…recommended.

Die schönste Elektronikversuchung kommt diesen Monat aus Estland und ist von Taavi Laatsit aka Galaktlan. Der ist tagsüber Telekommunikationstechniker, feierabends Popstar und hat, wie sein Künstlername schon sagt, einen Sinn für die extraterrestrische Dimension. Kein Wunder, denn da, wo er wohnt, scheinen die Sterne klar und hell - vor allem bei minus 20° C, was in Tallinn schon mal so vorkommt. „Sinine Platoo“ (Blaues Plateau) ist der Name einer Traumlandschaft, die Galaktlan eines Nachts zugeflogen ist. Auf dem Album vermischen sich Betrachtungen der nordischen Natur, schlanke Elektrobeats und Space-Hypnose, fast möchte man ihm, wie in Carpenters „Dark Star“, zurufen, „Hey Dolittle, möchtest du nicht zum Essen runterkommen? Nein, will er nicht, denn es ist spannend da oben. Der Kosmos ist für Galaktlan nämlich kein toter physikalischer Raum, sondern ein lebendiges Wesen. Inspiriert durch pantheistische Ideenwelten und den estischen Sci-Fi-Soundtrackproduzenten Sven Grünberg bastelt er mit Reaktor, klobigen Sowjet-Synthies und Vocoder Tracks zusammen, die einfach nicht von dieser Welt sind. Wie Schneeflocken tanzen sie vor unseren Augen - nimmt man eine in die Hand, wird sie zu einer kleinen Klimpermelodie namens „mina kaheks“, „sulase surm“ oder „klavestra“ und trifft zuweilen mitten ins Herz. Dabei ist „Sinine Platoo“ eine anfangs eher kühl wirkende Platte, die jedoch mit jedem Hören tiefere Schichten von elektronischer Wärme offenlegt und auf Samtpfötchen zu mitreißenden Momenten gelangt. „tekitaja“ zum Beispiel: Das Stück beginnt mit einer spiralnebelhaften, ein wenig an Boards of Canada erinnernden Melodie, die immer mehr an Plastizität gewinnt, bis sie mit einem plötzlichen Ruck vom Boden abhebt - alle Mann an Bord? Wahnsinn. Genauso wie das Bonbon, das mir Galaktlan mal verabreicht hat: Zuerst schmeckte es salzig, dann eine Weile nach Lebertran, schließlich implodierte das Ding und setzte eine Portion Pfeffer frei, die man (logisch) mit einem herzhaften Wässerchen herunterspülen musste, um den vollen Effekt zu haben.

Mõelgem nimele “Galaktlan”. Ausalt öeldes, mitte tingimata galaktilised mastaabid ei tule mulle meelde, pigem peatäis kodust, turvalist olmehõngu. Just nagu “Electrolux” või “Moulinex” või muud säärast. “Sinine platoo” ei kõnele minuga ega kõnele midagi. Kõik see, mida ta teeb, ei koondu sihilisse verbi. See plaat räägib kuidagi, nii ja teisiti, omaette.
Eks ole kogu meie ümber askeldav olmeelektroonika armastusväärne mitte tingimata oma niigi enesestmõistetava funktsionaalsuse tõttu, vaid sellepärast, kui esteetilised nad on, kui pehmed ja voolujoonelised ja mõnusalt surisevad. Uue aja masinad on sellised, et polegi tahtmist lapsiku uudishimuga uurida, mis nende sees on. Nad on kujundatud nõnda, et neil justkui polekski sisemust. Võtame näiteks selle plaadi rütmi – ei hoopiski kaasakiskuv, ei hoopiski funky. Pigem regulatiivne kui kommunikatiivne.
Just sel põhjusel polegi mul põhjust sekkuda sellesse, mis nende lugudes sünnib. Ma pole kuulaja. Olen pealtkuulaja.
